Meet Richie! The Head Chef at Lakeside, Roadford Lake.

Hi everyone, my name is Richie and I am the Head Chef at Lakeside Cafe at Roadford Lake!

I was born in Devonport, Plymouth and went to both Primary and Secondary school in Saltash after my parents moved there. From the age of about 12 was when I started to become interested in cooking after watching my mum and auntie cooking all the time. From that point on, I knew I wanted to become a chef, I just wasn’t sure on how I would get there.

I joined the Army at the age of 16 and became an apprentice at the Army school of catering in Aldershot. I went on to serve in the Army for 24 years and served in some inhospitable conditions in places like Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Northern Ireland and Mainland UK.

I left the Army in 2008 and started work at Lostwithiel Golf and Country Club as a Sous Chef, and was promoted to Head Chef soon after. I moved back to Saltash and left the golf club to do some agency work to enhance my knowledge on catering outside of the Army.

After doing a summer season on the road, I felt like the time was right to settle down. That’s when I joined South West Lakes Trust as their Head Chef at Lakeside Cafe at Roadford Lake!
