Dark Skies Discovery Family Event at Wimbleball Lake

On Saturday 27th October, come along to Wimbleball Lake between 4pm – 9pm for a Dark Skies Discovery Family Event. Forming part of Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve on Exmoor, Wimbleball provides an ideal location for this event, which promises be an informative and exciting one for those who enjoy looking at the night sky.

At 4pm, join a ‘Walk across the Solar System’, guided by Hugh Saxby. Learn about the planets as you walk around the dusky lake. From 6pm (weather permitting), why not be starry-eyed and try a spot of stargazing? Led by Tiverton & Mid Devon Astronomy Society, telescopes will be provided but you may like to bring binoculars if you have them.

At 6pm, there will also be a family-focussed talk on the dark skies and stargazing by Astronomer Dr Lilian Hobbs, followed by a further talk at 7pm: ‘Astronomy using your Tablet’. Find out about some of the Apps available for your tablet or smartphone to help you explore the night sky, spot the International Space Station, follow a NASA space mission or read your favourite magazine or book.

Refreshments will be available from the Duck Café, and enjoy a bonfire throughout the evening with the added bonus of free marshmallows!

Booking is essential, as spaces are limited. Seating will be limited so do please bring a fold-up chair if required. The event will take place whatever the weather.
